Adrian Martinez headed to the 49ers

The former Clovis West standout is headed back to California, this time as a member of San Francisco’s practice squad.

The San Francisco 49ers signed former Clovis West quarterback Adrian Martinez to fill a gap on their depth chart following recent roster cuts.

Earlier in the week, the 49ers cut two quarterbacks, Carter Bradley and Tanner Mordecai, to meet the NFL’s 53-player roster limit.

The big picture: Martinez, formerly with the New York Jets, joins the 49ers as their third-string quarterback and will be part of the practice squad.

  • Martinez played college football at Nebraska and Kansas State and was part of the 2023 NFL Draft class but was not selected.
  • After the 2023 draft, Martinez spent the summer with the Detroit Lions before being picked up by the Jets in 2024.
  • With the Jets, Martinez alternated between the active roster and practice squad throughout the season and preseason.
  • The Jets released Martinez during roster cuts, choosing to retain Justin Fields, Tyrod Taylor, and Brady Cook (practice squad) over him.

State of play: The 49ers’ starting quarterback is Brock Purdy, who recently signed a lucrative contract extension.

  • San Francisco’s backup quarterback for the season is Mac Jones, acquired in the offseason; Jones was a first-round pick by the Patriots and highly regarded by 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan.
