Stockton man arrested for supporting ISIS

The man sent money to an undercover individual who he thought was affiliated with ISIS.

A Stockton man was arrested for allegedly trying to help ISIS.

The big picture: Ammaad Akhtar, 33, was charged with attempting to provide material support to a designated foreign terrorist organization.

  • Court documents state that Akhtar was communicating online with a law enforcement-controlled individual, whom Akhtar believed was a member of ISIS, since February.

Driving the news: Akhtar voiced his support for ISIS and jihad and stated his desire to join and fight with ISIS, as well as his desire to send guns and money to ISIS.

  • In April, Akhtar provided financial funding on multiple occasions to support ISIS.
  • The law enforcement-controlled individual indicated that ISIS had procured several guns with the money that Akhtar had sent. Akhtar responded, “may Allah destroy our enemies.”
  • He also talked about planning acts of violence and asked for instructions on how to make a homemade explosive device.
  • Last Monday, Akhtar met an undercover employee who he believed was an ISIS associate. Akhtar provided clothing, binoculars, $400 cash, two loaded guns and six additional magazines. He also swore a pledge of loyalty, known as a bayat, to ISIS.

What we’re watching: Akhtar faces a maximum of 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine if convicted.
