A Stockton man was arrested for allegedly trying to help ISIS.
The big picture: Ammaad Akhtar, 33, was charged with attempting to provide material support to a designated foreign terrorist organization.
- Court documents state that Akhtar was communicating online with a law enforcement-controlled individual, whom Akhtar believed was a member of ISIS, since February.
Driving the news: Akhtar voiced his support for ISIS and jihad and stated his desire to join and fight with ISIS, as well as his desire to send guns and money to ISIS.
- In April, Akhtar provided financial funding on multiple occasions to support ISIS.
- The law enforcement-controlled individual indicated that ISIS had procured several guns with the money that Akhtar had sent. Akhtar responded, “may Allah destroy our enemies.”
- He also talked about planning acts of violence and asked for instructions on how to make a homemade explosive device.
- Last Monday, Akhtar met an undercover employee who he believed was an ISIS associate. Akhtar provided clothing, binoculars, $400 cash, two loaded guns and six additional magazines. He also swore a pledge of loyalty, known as a bayat, to ISIS.
What we’re watching: Akhtar faces a maximum of 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine if convicted.
