Newsom sends burner phones to CEOs, urges them to call

The governor is looking to make inroads in California’s business community by directly connecting with business leaders.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom has been sending burner phones with his number already in them to some of the top business executives in the state.

KCRA reported that Newsom’s office confirmed the existence of the phones on Monday night.

The big picture: Newsom has sent the phones to around 100 CEOs of the largest companies based in California.

  • Funding for the phones is covered by the California State Protocol Foundation, per Newsom’s office. The foundation is a nonprofit that has funded events such as Newsom’s inauguration and travel.

What they’re saying: “This was the governor’s idea to connect more directly with business leaders in the state,” Newsom spokesman Izzy Gardon told KCRA. “The feedback has been positive, and it’s led to valuable interactions.”

Go deeper: Politico reported that one note Newsom sent to a prominent tech CEO said “If you ever need anything, I’m a phone call away.”

  • That message was reportedly printed on official letterhead, and the note also included a hand-written message from Newsom urging the CEO to reach out.
