With a potential challenge from Rep. Kevin Kiley (R–Rocklin) up in the air, Rep. Tom McClintock (R–Elk Grove) has the support of most of the Republican county parties in his district.
McClintock has received the endorsement from nine of the county Republican parties in the new 5th Congressional District.
Driving the news: Under the new map for the 5th district with the passage of Proposition 50, McClintock currently represents 80% of the population of the new district.
- The new district now covers El Dorado, Amador, Calaveras, Tuolumne, Mariposa, Stanislaus, Madera, Fresno, San Joaquin, Alpine, Inyo and Mono counties. McClintock has not represented San Joaquin, Inyo and Mono counties before.
The big picture: The Tuolumne County Republican Party endorsed McClintock for the new 5th district last Saturday.
- In addition to Tuolumne County, McClintock has been endorsed by the El Dorado, Amador, Calaveras, Mariposa, Madera, Fresno, Stanislaus and San Joaquin County Republican Parties.
- Those nine counties who have endorsed McClintock make up 97% of the population for the new 5th district.
What he’s saying: “I am deeply honored to have earned the support and trust of the Republican County Parties that make up the 5th Congressional District,” McClintock said. “Their support over the years have allowed me to represent our district in Congress and be a leader for our Conservative principles in the House.”
State of play: The support for McClintock comes in as Kiley revealed last week that he is exploring a run in the 5th district.
- Kiley has opted out of running for reelection in the 3rd district, which now favors Democrats under Prop. 50. Instead, Kiley announced last week that he will make a choice between running in the new 5th and 6th districts.
- He also launched an ad campaign in the Fresno media market, spending tens of thousands of dollars on television ads over a two-week period in February.
