Sen. Adam Schiff is weighing in on a Fresno City Council race.
Schiff announced Thursday that he is endorsing Nav Gurm to represent District 7 on the Fresno City Council.
Driving the news: Gurm, a local political consultant and former legislative aide who graduates from law school next month, is looking to succeed Councilmember Nelson Esparza at City Hall.
- Esparza, who is in his second term on the council, announced last year that he is running for State Senate in 2026.
- Gurm already has the support of much of the Democratic base in Fresno, including Esparza, Councilmembers Annalisa Perea and Tyler Maxwell, as well as Fresno County Supervisor Luis Chavez, former Fresno County Supervisor Henry R. Perea and Fresno County Assessor Paul Dictos.
- U.S. Senators typically have not weighed in on a Fresno City Council race in the past, making Schiff’s endorsement a rare one.
What they’re saying: “Nav Gurm brings a thoughtful, forward-looking perspective to the Fresno City Council,” Schiff said. “He understands the challenges facing Fresno families and will be a tireless advocate for safer neighborhoods, affordable housing, and good-paying jobs that uplift our working families. I’m confident Nav will always put his constituents first and help move Fresno in the right direction.”
- Gurm said he is honored and humbled by Schiff’s endorsement.
- “Fresno’s future is bright, but only if we invest in our neighborhoods today,” Gurm said. “I’m dedicated to bringing new energy to City Hall, tackling immediate challenges like roads, parks, and public safety, while planning thoughtfully for long-term economic growth and opportunity. Together, we’ll ensure that District 7 thrives.”
