Former Madera County Sheriff Anderson passes away

John Anderson’s career in law enforcement spanned over five decades, which wrapped up with a lengthy stretch as the Madera County Sheriff.

Former Madera County Sheriff John Anderson passed away peacefully at his home in Nipomo last Friday. 

Madera County Sheriff Tyson Pogue announced Anderson’s passing on Facebook on Saturday. 

Anderson’s life and career: Anderson served in the Army after graduating high school, and was stationed in West Germany and Laos before starting his career in law enforcement. 

  • His first two law enforcement jobs came with the Williams Police Department and the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department. 
  • Anderson joined the California Highway Patrol in 1964, where he held a number of roles including special representative to the Legislature and Congress, commander of the CHP Academy and division commander of the Northern and Central Divisions. 
  • Madera County voters elected Anderson as sheriff in 1998, a position he remained in until he retired in 2014. 

Zoom in: During Anderson’s time as Madera County Sheriff, he launched the Madera County Narcotic Enforcement Team in 1999 to focus on drug-related issues. He also launched the Save Our Seniors program to provide seniors with cell phones for emergency use. 

  • Anderson also established the Citizens on Patrol program in 1999 to bring in a volunteer unit which was trained to patrol neighborhoods, assist deputies at crime scenes and conduct vacation checks of residences. 

What he’s saying: “His legacy of service, innovation, and dedication will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of working with him,” Pogue said in a statement. “As we mourn his loss, let us also celebrate his life and the indelible mark he left on our community.”
