High winds to lead to PG&E power shutoffs across Valley

Thousands of customers in California may be without their power over parts of the weekend as high winds lead to an increased wildfire risk.

Parts of the Central Valley will likely be without power this weekend because of high winds in the forecast.

Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) announced that it may turn off the power in over a dozen counties as part of its public safety shutoff protections.

The big picture: PG&E sent out an alert to customers saying many counties will have areas that will require shutoffs through Saturday.

  • Central Valley counties that will require shutoffs due to high winds and dry conditions are Fresno, Merced, San Joaquin and Stanislaus counties.
  • PG&E expects shutoffs to remain possible on Sunday but does not expect them.

Zoom in: The actual areas affected by the shutoffs vary from county to county, ranging from less than 20 customers in Fresno County to nearly 1,000 in San Joaquin County.

  • According to PG&E, 17 customers in Fresno County, 55 in Merced County, 985 in San Joaquin County and 147 in Stanislaus County will likely have their power shut off.
