Fresno County Sheriff John Zanoni said he supports President Donald Trump’s decision to deploy the National Guard to protect federal agents from rioters in Los Angeles.
Driving the news: Trump ordered 2,000 National Guard troops to Los Angeles to protect Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers from the rioters, after protests over their activities sparked over the weekend.
- Trump also ordered 700 Marines to the area to assist the National Guard and local police.
What he’s saying: Zanoni issued a statement saying the involvement of the National Guard became necessary when the safety of the residents of Los Angeles became at-risk because of the riots.
- “Additionally, law enforcement officers had their safety placed in jeopardy from the violent actions of these rioters,” Zanoni said. “In order to provide safety and security for those working and living in Los Angeles, the National Guard needed to be deployed.”
- Zanoni said the issue is “simply a matter of public safety.”
- “Several politicians, including Governor Newsom, have jeopardized that safety because of their stance to not deploy the National Guard and protect our people in California. Governor Newsom has once again failed his duties. On top of that, he is wasting our tax dollars as he has on so many things. In this case, by suing Trump over the deployment of the National Guard.”
- Zanoni continued, “President Trump did what he had to do to address a clear and present danger that these rioters and protesters presented. As elected, local state and federal leaders, we have a duty and an obligation to protect our residents and of California and the United States.”
