Preliminary count shows homelessness up in Fresno, Madera counties

The full results from January’s point-in-time count will be released in the coming months.

A preliminary analysis of the point-in-time count for Fresno and Madera counties shows that homelessness has increased since the last count in 2023.

The Fresno Madera Continuum of Care released its preliminary results of the count on Monday and will have the full results later this year.

The backstory: The continuum of care conducted the 2025 count on Jan. 28, meeting the federal requirement to conduct a count at least biennially to receive funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Point-in-time counts take place during the last 10 days of January.

  • Such counts provide a snapshot of the homeless situation but are not able to determine the total number of people who are homeless throughout the year.
  • Agencies in Fresno and Madera counties use the point-in-time count to inform funding and policy decisions.

By the numbers: A preliminary analysis of the raw data revealed a 3% increase in homelessness in Fresno and Madera Counties from 2023’s count.

  • It also revealed that the number of homeless people who are unsheltered has increased by around 10%.

What we’re watching: The continuum of care will submit the point-in-time count data to the Department of Housing and Urban Development by June 13.

  • Once it submits the data to the federal government, the continuum of care will release the final results of the 2025 count and have a full report.
