Kopi announces retirement from KMPH

The longtime weatherman and Great Day host is preparing for his final appearance on Fresno’s local FOX affiliate.

Longtime Fresno broadcaster Kopi Sotiropulos will sign off for the last time next month.

Sotiropulos announced on Wednesday that he will retire from KMPH on March 27.

Kopi’s career: Born in Greece, Sotiropulos immigrated to the United States with his family at the age of three.

  • He attended Fremont Elementary School, Hamilton Jr. High School and Fresno High School before studying broadcasting at San Francisco State University.
  • KMPH hired Sotiropulos when the station launched in 1971, where he wrote, produced, shot edited and performed in commercials and promos. He also hosted “Dialing for Dollars.”
  • Six years later, Sotiropulos and his wife Elaine moved to Hollywood so he could pursue a career in acting.
  • Throughout his decade in Hollywood, Sotiropulos worked alongside stars Eddie Murphy, David Letterman, Michael Keaton, Mary Tyler Moore and many others.
  • Sotiropulos moved back to Fresno in 1992, where he rejoined KMPH as the weatherman for the Ten O’clock News.
  • He also joined Great Day as a co-host alongside Kim Stephens.

What he’s saying: “After all these years, it’s time to take a break,” Sotiropulos said on Great Day. “This has been a great run. I’ve been thrilled to work here at Channel 26. I’ve met a lot of wonderful people over the years, and you know, it comes a time in your life when you say, ‘Hey, I’ve got to move on.’”
