Janz launches new criminal unit for Fresno City Attorney’s office, snags two new attorneys

Fresh off its first-ever action against wage theft, the Fresno City Attorney’s Office is hiring two lawyers from the county to help its expanded duties.

The Fresno City Attorney’s Office is launching a new criminal and special assignments unit.

Two attorneys have also recently been sworn into the office as it expands its capabilities.

The big picture: The City Attorney’s Office is forming a new specialized Criminal and Special Assignments Unit to focus on Fresno Municipal Code prosecution.

  • The unit will also focus on special assignments, such as wage theft prosecution.
  • That comes immediately after the city filed its first-ever wage theft complaint, which came against an operator of a northwest Fresno Holiday Inn.

Who’s joining the team: Attorneys John F Tully III and Ashley Sue Paulson are joining the Fresno City Attorney’s Office.

  • Tully comes to the city after 18 years with the Fresno County District Attorney’s Office, where he prosecuted cases including violent crimes, narcotics trafficking, asset forfeiture and financial crimes.
  • He obtained a Juris Doctor from San Joaquin College of Law.
  • Paulson also joins the city after over a decade with the Fresno County District Attorney’s Office, where she was a Deputy District Attorney.
  • Paulson was assigned to the Multi Agency Gang Enforcement Consortium for the past five years, where she specialized in prosecuting gang and human trafficking cases.
  • She has conducted around 50 jury trials and grand jury proceedings throughout her career.
  • Paulson earned her law degree from the Thomas Jefferson School of Law in San Diego.

What he’s saying: “We are excited to welcome these two talented attorneys to our office,” said City Attorney Andrew Janz. “Their experience and energy will be instrumental in furthering our mission for the betterment of our community and protecting the City of Fresno.”
