Fresno man pleads guilty to Paycheck Protection Program fraud

The trucking business owner took over $1 million in stimulus funds by lying on the loan applications.

A Fresno man could spend up to a decade in prison for committing fraud with stimulus relief from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Acting U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of California announced Wednesday that Gurjeet Bath, 37, pleaded guilty to one count of theft of government property.

The big picture: Bath and other family members operated two trucking businesses – G.S. Bath Inc. and Complete Transportation Solutions (CTS) – in Fresno County.

  • Bath applied for and received three Paycheck Protection Program loans in 2020 and 2021 that totaled over $1 million.
  • He falsified records to inflate his businesses’ employees and wages in order to obtain the loans.
  • After receiving the money, Bath used around $600,000 to purchase two parcels of farm land in Fresno County.

What we’re watching: Bath will be sentenced in federal court on Oct. 6 by U.S. District Judge Jennifer Thurston.

  • He faces a maximum of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
