Fresno man guilty of throwing meth over prison fence 

The man was already on supervised release at the time.

A Fresno man has pleaded guilty in court to throwing methamphetamine over a prison fence. 

The big picture: Garrett Scott Wheelen, 33, pleaded guilty to possessing over 500 grams of a substance containing methamphetamine. 

  • Whelan arrived at the Federal Correctional Institution Mendota on May 1, 2024, wearing a facemask, hat and hoodie to hide his identity. 
  • Wheelen ran to the prison fence and tossed four packages into the prison’s recreation yard. 
  • Officials quickly apprehended Wheelen after he attempted to flee. 
  • The packages contained over three pounds of methamphetamine. He was on supervised release from a prior federal felony charge. 

What we’re watching: Wheelen is scheduled to be sentenced on May 2. 

  • He faces a maximum of 20 years in prison and a $1 million fine.
