Fresno Democrats have come out against Gov. Gavin Newsom after his comments regarding transgender people competing in women’s sports.
Driving the news: Newsom hosted conservative commentator Charlie Kirk on the first episode of his new podcast “This is Gavin Newsom.”
- Kirk asked Newsom about transgender athletes competing in women’s sports, and while Newsom did not directly come out against that from happening, he called it “deeply unfair.”
- “I think it’s an issue of fairness,” Newsom said. “I completely agree with you on that. It is an issue of fairness. It’s deeply unfair. I am not wrestling with the fairness issue. I totally agree with you.”
- Democrats, including Sen. Scott Wiener (D–San Francisco) quickly spoke out against Newsom for the comments.
What they’re saying: The Fresno County Democratic Party released a statement on Friday voicing its displeasure with the governor.
- The Fresno County Democratic Party said it believes in championing transgender and LGBTQ people and are proud of their work within the local party.
- “Mr. Newsom’s comments are very disappointing,” said Marsha Conant, 1st Vice-Chair of the Fresno County Democratic Party. “These are not the values of the Democratic Party. We believe in the unique diversity and perspectives everyone brings to the table. This includes our transgender community members. It’s especially true now that the Republican party has dedicated itself to removing them from public existence. Erasing history from national websites, purging data from federal databases, and trying to pass legislation to keep them out of public spaces. Now, more than ever, we need to stand with our transgender community.”
