A former Sanger police officer was indicted by a federal grand jury for illegal firearms dealing.
The big picture: Daniel Battenfield, 40, faces charges for unlawful dealing of firearms without a license, making materially false statements to a federal agent and lying on a federal firearms form.
- Battenfield allegedly purchased and resold hundreds of firearms since 2016.
- He used his status as a police officer to purchase firearms below market price and then resell them for profit.
- There was at least one occasion where Battenfield placed an order directly for a customer and lied on a federal firearms form about purchasing the firearm for himself.
- Federal agents confronted him about his activities, and he made false statements to them.
- He was placed on leave from the Sanger Police Department because of the firearms dealing in July of last year.
What we’re watching: Battenfield faces a maximum of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine if convicted of unlawful dealing in firearms or making a false statement to a government agency.
- If he is convicted of making a materially false statement in purchase of firearms, he will face a maximum of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
