E. coli detected at Avocado Lake

Fresno County officials are urging people to take precautions if they swim in local bodies of water.

Elevated E. coli levels have been detected at Avocado Lake.

The Central Valley Regional Water Quality Control Board announced that a sample collected on July 30 surpassed the Statewide Bacteria Water Quality Objectives.

Driving the news: The Central Valley Water Board monitors and evaluates water quality data for lakes and rivers throughout the Central Valley that are used for recreational activities.

  • E. coli samples are collected in selected watersheds weekly. The results are publicly available on an online interactive map

What to do: While most E. coli strains are harmless, the Fresno County Department of Public Health is urging people to take precautions when swimming in local lakes and rivers.

  • The department says to not drink river or lake water and to not use river or lake water for cooking or washing dishes.
  • Further guidance includes for people to wash thoroughly with clean water after swimming.
