Head Start programs in Fresno and Tulare counties will receive over $35 million in federal funding that was secured by Rep. Jim Costa (D–Fresno).
Costa announced that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is sending $35.4 million to both counties to support Head Start and Early Head Start services.
The big picture: The Fresno Economic Opportunities Commission is receiving $23.7 million for its Head Start programs to serve Fresno County.
- In Tulare County, Health and Human Services is providing the Tulare County Office of Education with $11.6 million.
- The grants will support ongoing programs operations, staff retention, classroom improvements and expanded access to services for eligible families.
Why it matters: Head Start programs provide early childhood education, healthcare and family support services to families in the region.
- They are federal funded programs that promote school readiness for children up to the age of five.
- Specifically, some of the services offered in Head Start programs include early education, health screenings, nutrition assistance and parental support to underserved families.
What he’s saying: “Every child deserves a fair shot, no matter their zip code or family income. I’ve always fought to protect Head Start because it gives kids the tools to succeed,” Costa said. “This funding means more children will walk into kindergarten ready to learn, and more families will have access to reliable, affordable childcare they can count on.”
