Bakersfield man pleads guilty to pointing laser at helicopter

The man repeatedly struck a Kern County Sheriff’s Office helicopter, making it difficult for the pilots to see the helicopter’s instruments.

A Bakersfield man pleaded guilty in federal court on Monday to aiming a laser pointer at an aircraft.

Driving the news: On Sep. 11, 2024, Brett Curtis Hair, 23, pointed a bright green laser beam at a Kern County Sheriff’s Office helicopter that was on a routine patrol.

  • The Tactical Flight Officer pinpointed the source of the laser to a residence within the Federal Aviation Administration’s Critical Flight Zone of Bakersfield’s Meadow FIeld Airport.
  • The helicopter arrived at the residence, and Hair exited the garage and immediately struck the cockpit again with the laser.

What we’re watching: Hair is scheduled to be sentenced on Aug. 4.

  • He faces a maximum of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
