Bakersfield felon guilty of possessing explosive device

Robert Hunt, who is currently locked up, placed an explosive device at a community pool.

A Bakersfield man pleaded guilty in federal court to manufacturing a destructive device that was found at a community pool. 

The big picture: Robert Hunt, 40, pleaded guilty to being a convicted felon in possession of a destructive device and manufacturing a destructive device. 

  • On July 4 and July 5, 2022, Hunt constructed a destructive device containing metal screws and explosives. 
  • The device was found at a community pool in a residential neighborhood, close to Hunt’s home. 
  • Hunt had been previously convicted for two robberies and a burglary, making him prohibited from manufacturing firearms, which includes destructive or explosive devices. 
  • Hunt has been detained since September 2024 and is considered a danger to the community. 

What we’re watching: Hunt’s sentencing is scheduled for July 14. 

  • He faces 15 years in prison and a $250,000 fine for being a felon in possession of a destructive device. 
  • For the manufacturing charge, Hunt faces 10 years in prison and another $250,000 fine.
