School district board members across California could be in for major raises if a proposed state law passes.
The law, Assembly Bill 1390, could see Fresno Unified trustees make annual salaries of $90,000.
The big picture: Current state law allows school districts that have over 60,000 students to give their board members who attend all meetings $1,500 per month.
- Board members for districts that have 25,000 students to 60,000 students can receive $750 per month under current state law.
- State law also allows boards to give themselves 5% raises annually, which the Fresno Unified Board of Trustees implemented in 2019.
- AB 1390, which was proposed by Asm. Jose Solache (D–Lynwood), would increase the monthly compensation to board members by five times.
- FUSD has officially submitted its support for the bill to the State Senate.
By the numbers: With over 71,000 students enrolled in the district, FUSD trustees currently are allowed the $1,500 per month stipend, plus 5% annual raises from 2019. GV Wire reported that trustees currently make $1,735 monthly.
- Under AB 1390, FUSD trustees could make $7,500 per month, which comes out to $90,000 per year.
- Clovis Unified School District currently has over 42,000 students enrolled. Board members currently make $750 per month, totaling $9,000 annually. AB 1390 would set their compensation to $3,750 per month and $45,000 annually.
