Central Unified School District has found its next superintendent, bringing Mark E. Marshall to Fresno from Los Banos.
The Central Unified School District Board of Trustees announced Monday that Marshall will be appointed as the district’s next superintendent on June 10.
The big picture: Marshall comes to Central Unified with nearly four decades of education experience under his belt, including the last eight years as the superintendent of Los Banos Unified School District.
- In his role in Los Banos, Marshall oversaw nearly 11,000 students and 1,200 employees in a district that has a $200 million budget.
- One of his achievements was guiding the district to successfully pass local bond Measure X.
- He has also been instrumental in securing over $62 million in competitive grants for the district and led Los Banos Unified to its second-ever California Distinguished School honor.
Flashback: Central Unified parted ways with former Superintendent Ketti Davis in March.
- Davis had been the superintendent since May 2022 and started at Central Unified three decades prior.
- Former Clovis Unified School District Superintendent Eimear O’Brien has been filling in as Central’s interim superintendent since late March.
What they’re saying: Central Unified said on Monday that the board was especially impressed by Marshall’s student-centered philosophy, collaborative leadership style and his commitment to building inclusive school cultures that promote equity and academic excellence for all.
- The board also thanked O’Brien for her steady leadership during the transition period.
- “In the weeks ahead, Dr. Marshall will begin engaging with students, staff, families, and community members throughout Central Unified as he prepares to step into his new role,” the district said in a statement. “The district looks forward to a strong start under his leadership and to continuing its mission of putting students at the center of every decision.”
