California officials seize $123 million in illegal cannabis

Over 100,000 illegal cannabis plants were seized in the southern part of the Central Valley.

California officials recently conducted the largest-ever cannabis eradication operation in the Central Valley, seizing thousands of pounds and plants of illegal cannabis with an estimated value of approximately $123 million.

The operation took place across three counties, including Kern, Tulare and Kings, during the week of May 5. Multiple warrants were served, and law enforcement officials made numerous arrests, seizing nine firearms in the process.

The big picture: The operation resulted in the seizure of 105,700 illegal cannabis plants and 22,057 pounds of processed cannabis with a total estimated value of $123.5 million.

  • The operation involved the participation of various local and state agencies, including the Kern, Kings, and Tulare sheriffs’ offices, the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), the California National Guard, and the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
  • The operation was also credited for the successful elimination of $650 million in illegal cannabis, destruction of 800,000 illegal plants, and the seizure of over $1 million in cash since 2022.

What they’re saying: “Let this be a reminder to all who grow cannabis illegally: we won’t tolerate the undermining of our legal industry and impacts to our environment,” said Gov. Gavin Newsom in a statement. “I appreciate the multi-agency, cross-county efforts to take on the illicit market.”

  • Nicole Elliot, the Department of Cannabis Control director, added, “This operation sends a clear message: California will not tolerate illicit cannabis activity that threatens public safety, the environment, and the integrity of the legal market.”
