New power substation opens in Central Valley

LS Power recently energized a new substation that will support the local power grid.

A new substation in the Central Valley is enhancing the region’s power grid.

LS Power celebrated the opening of the Orchard Substation on Thursday after it was energized in March.

Flashback: The California Independent System Operator (CAISO) selected LS Power Grid California to sponsor the Orchard Substation project after a competitive process in 2020.

The big picture: The Orchard Substation, located near Huron, provides dynamic voltage control with 800+ MVAR support to the power grid.

  • It is also the largest static synchronous compensator installation in North America.
  • LS Power completed the project at a cost that came in below the original estimate.

What they’re saying: “I commend our team for successfully placing the Orchard Substation in service, marking our first transmission asset in the state of California,” said Paul Thessen, President of LS Power Development. “This addition complements our growing transmission systems in operation or development across eight states, including five more transmission infrastructure projects in development now across California.”
