August Egg Company in Hilmar initiated a recall of 1.7 million dozen brown cage-free and certified organic eggs due to potential Salmonella contamination.
The recall covers eggs distributed between February 3 and May 15, with sell-by dates between March 4 and June 4 in California and Nevada.
The big picture: The affected eggs were also distributed to Walmart locations in California, Washington, Nevada, Arizona, Wyoming, New Mexico, Nebraska, Indiana, and Illinois between February 3rd and May 6th.
- The recalled eggs can be identified by plant code numbers (P-6562 or CA5330) and Julian Dates printed on the carton between 32 and 126.
- The recall is connected to an investigation into an outbreak of Salmonella Enteritidis illnesses.
Why it matters: Salmonella infections can cause severe health issues, especially in vulnerable populations.
- Symptoms of Salmonella infection may include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.
- Consumers are advised to return the affected eggs to the point of purchase for a full refund.
Go deeper: August Egg Company has stopped selling fresh shell eggs and is sending the eggs to be pasteurized.
What they’re saying: “August Egg Company of Hilmar, CA is voluntarily recalling 1,700,000 dozen shell eggs processed at our California plant and sold to various grocery customers. This recall has been initiated due to possible Salmonella enteritidis contamination, which poses a health risk. With that in mind, we believe it is appropriate out of an abundance of caution to conduct this voluntary recall, as consumers may still have these eggs in their homes,” the company said in a statement.
- “It is important to know that when our processing plant identified this concern, we immediately began diverting all eggs from the plant to an egg-breaking facility, which pasteurizes the eggs and kills any pathogens.
- “August Egg Company’s internal food safety team also is conducting its own stringent review to identify what measures can be established to prevent this situation from recurring. We are committed to addressing this matter fully and to implementing all necessary corrective actions to ensure this does not happen again.”
