Nunes taps impeachment furor as fuel for reelection warchest

The impeachment battle on Capitol Hill has put Rep. Devin Nunes back under the intense Washington media glare, but also in the fundraising driver’s seat.

There’s something to be said for being the eye of the storm.

That goes double if the storm just so happens to be the impeachment of President Donald Trump.

For Rep. Devin Nunes (R–Tulare), the impeachment battle returned the dairyman back into the glare of a Washington media spectacle and aided the launch of a new defamation lawsuit over salacious, unproven claims levelled by CNN.

But, perhaps most importantly for his immediate prospects, the sparring with House Intelligence Committee chairman Adam Schiff (D–Pasadena) over impeachment came with an added bonus for Nunes: an outpouring of financial support for re-election.

Tuesday, sources reported that Nunes hauled in roughly $2.1 million for his 2020 campaign during the final quarter of 2019, coinciding with the impeachment hearings.

The news was first reported by The Washington Examiner.

According to The Examiner, Nunes’ end-of-year haul leaves him with $7.2 million in the bank heading into 2020.

As of the close of the third quarter, Nunes’ nearest competitor – Fresno financial advisor Phil Arballo – held $235,897.63 on hand. Arballo’s camp reported raising nearly $700,000 during impeachment.

Official fundraising figures are due to the Federal Elections Commission on Jan. 31.
