Big Times are Rolling: Fresno Fair switches to drive-thru format

Following in the footsteps of other fairs throughout California, the Big Fresno Fair announced Tuesday that it will be held in a drive-thru and virtual format due to the coronavirus pandemic and the state’s orders preventing large gatherings.

The Fair is scheduled to run from Oct. 8 to Oct. 18.

“Our goal has always been to bring an aspect of this beloved tradition to our community in a healthy and safe manner as guided by our health officials,” said Deputy Manager Lauri King in a statement.

“Now as we are just two months away from October, we have centered on the decision to move forward with plans for a drive-thru and virtual Fair experience format as it’s the most prudent option to bring our community a bit of Fair fun, while doing our part to protect public health and safety.”

The Fair currently has a few events planned for the reimagined fair and will finalize more plans over the next two months:

  • Drive-thru fair food with grounds entertainers performing as individuals wait in their vehicles.
  • Live horse racing with no spectators. Online wagering will be available.
  • Virtual livestock auction with potential for single-species “show and go” judging days.
  • Virtual competitive exhibits show.

The Table Mountain Concert Series in the Paul Paul Theater was previously cancelled earlier in July.

“While this year’s Fair experience will be nothing like years past, it will still be a fun, worthwhile experience that we hope will bring smiles to the faces of our community – all while continuing to work together to keep everyone safe,” Kings said.

Fresno County Interim Health Officer Dr. Rais Vohra said Tuesday that the department will have discussions with the Fair management over the next few weeks about the event.
